Respect is a fundamental human need. In order to feel valued, appreciated, and in control of our lives, we need to feel respected by others. Unfortunately, disrespect is all too common. Whether it’s intentional or not, disrespect can damage relationships, hinder productivity, and cause emotional pain. When we feel disrespected, our natural instinct is to react.

But, before we lash out in anger or withdraw in hurt, it’s important to pause and consider the situation. Is the disrespect coming from a person who is normally respectful? If so, there might be a misunderstanding that can be cleared up with a calm conversation.

If the disrespect is coming from someone who is habitually disrespectful, however, it might be best to set some boundaries. Respect quotes can be a helpful way to ground ourselves when we’re feeling disrespected. By reading and reflecting on the wisdom of others, we can gain a new perspective on the situation and find the strength to respond in a constructive way.
